In modern society, cars are a part of our lives. The global automotive industry is facing a great challenge because of back-to-back scandals over cheating exhaust emission and fuel economy tests. In this difficult period, our automotive researchers need to focus on developing technologies to resolve the current problems of emissions and fuel economy. Recently, our society is the age of convergence. The automobile society is also demanding the convergence of systems. As a result, automobile technology is also rapidly changing. Automotive technology is expanding into production technology, control technology, safety and environmental technology, and system integration technology for the fast and safe running of cars. For example, in the age of the internal combustion engine, which is the main power source for automobiles, automobile technology is changing in the age of hybrid systems that use both motor power and internal combustion engines, electric power systems, and fuel cell system. Recently, smart technology that has been developed due to the development of electronic technology is applied to automobiles, and technologies from automobile safety improvement to automobile autonomous driving system are being developed.
Recent automotive technologies is changing the business model from vehicle-only technology to vehicle-to-society system. The unmanned vehicle is a good example. And the worldwide trend of automotive technology development is changing from single development to cooperative development. Our country should also show advancement in this kind of cooperative development, even though we are sandwiched by leading automotive-production countries and the second-tier automotive-production countries.
Thus we are facing a big change in automobile technology development environment, and domestic auto industry requires a strategy that takes the ‘competition’ and ‘cooperation’ at the same time to survive in the global market.
With regard to the present state of automobile industry in Gwangju Metropolitan City, KIA Motors Corp. has a capacity of producing 620,000 vehicles annually. Gwangju Metropolitan City is promoting the eco-friendly auto parts industry with the support of the government. Critical tasks of this big project are given such as the local parts makers' own development for its techniques, improving its researching skills, and globalization.
Our committee decided the theme of this year as “Clean Tomorrow”. The goal of ICAT(International Conference on Advanced Automobile Technology) is to create a framework that ways of grasping for the latest trend of automobile technologies in the future can be broadly discussed. Main themes discussed at the ICAT is green car, unmanned vehicle, powertrain, and lightweight technology. The ICAT tries to lay the sure foundation down to get through many obstacles which lie in both domestic and foreign automobile industry. The ICAT committee members will continue to do our best to make the ICAT to be the top-class international conference on the state-of-the art automotive technology.
2017 ICAT is the 3rd international conference on automotive technologies that the Gwanju city and the relevant institutes get together to solve the current difficult problems of automotive technologies. The conference is organized by Automobile Research Center in Chonnam National University, Korea Automotive Technology Institute(KATECH), Gwangju Institute of Green-Car Component Industry Advancement, Gwangju Techno-park, Kimdaejung Convention Center, and KOTRA (Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency). Sponsorship is from the Gwangju Metropolitan City, The Korean Society of Automotive Engineers, and Gwangju Convention & Vistors Bureau.
